If there was ever a time I really felt I was transported through time – Game of Thrones times to be exact, lol, it would have to be here at Rozengrals.
You may also see it spelled in your researching as ROZENGRĀLS.
Rozengrals is the only authentic medieval restaurant in the Old Town of Riga, the capital of Latvia in Northern Europe.
Truth: my love for Game of Thrones was a strong deciding factor in wanting to try out this restaurant. Special thanks to the recommendation of my dear sister.
Also truth: I’ll be the first to say that it always helps to set your expectations low when dining at a popular tourist attraction. That way, you’re never disappointed.
Bottom line, such places offer overall experiences that often outweigh the quality of the food. Theme parks are the best examples of this.
While this wasn’t a theme park, Rozengrals certainly felt like one. Every detail, crevice, cutlery, furniture, fabric, grain of rice, gowns of waitresses and musicians’ instruments all cohesively made every guest felt like they were dining during the medieval times – with the modern perks of wifi, of course!
When actually, Rozengrals was a former wine cellar and festival hall of the Riga city council dating back to 1293.
To say I was impressed is an understatement.
The food was absolutely delicious! The sea bass I had was so succulent, perfectly seasoned, garnished and presented. Even the forest mushroom pottage was deceivingly depthful in flavor.
More impressively, the bread starter not only left a lovely taste in my mouth but a strong impression as well.
As you’ll see in this week’s medieval episode, absolutely no detail was taken for granted.
For the full effect, I imagined Rozengrals’ menu offerings were just like the dishes served in the Purple Wedding of King Joffrey to Margaery or the horrifying feast of all feasts: the Red Wedding, both iconic, gripping scenes from Game of Thrones.
Not shown: the unexpected, understated yet very popular dish that became a staple in all our meals in Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, aka, Baltic States. Watch and you’ll find out!
Oh, you can also check out another post I shared featuring Lithuania.
THE VERDICT:
If you ever find yourselves in Latvia, Rozengrals is one place I highly recommend.
Our beautiful waitress’ name, by the way is Taya Shin.
This is just the first of five episodes I am dedicating for the love of Game of Thrones.
